Procedure to Manually Firmware Update Orbi Manually

Firmware is like a software inside a networking device which you can update like it’s a phone. This process will provide a new version of the device; bugs will be fixes and new features comes. That’s why the interface always asks for the update when you are doing Orbi mesh setup. Here you will get to know procedure to firmware update orbi manually which is a simple process.

    Manually Firmware Update Orbi

    1. Check what version you’re on

First thing: figure out if you even need to update.

    • Open a browser and go to orbilogin.com or 192.168.1.1.
    • Log in with your admin creds (default’s usually admin / password unless you changed it — and you really should’ve).
    • Once you’re in, go to Advanced > Administration > Firmware Update.
    • Note down the version number you see.

    2. Grab the right firmware file

Don’t skip this part — using the wrong file can brick your mesh.

    • Head to the Netgear support site.
    • Search for your exact model (e.g., Orbi RBR850, RBS750, etc.).
    • Scroll to Downloads, grab the manual orbi update satellite firmware (the .img file).
    • Download it somewhere easy to find — desktop, downloads folder, whatever.

If you’ve got satellites, download the firmware for those too. They sometimes have separate files.

    3. Log into the Orbi router’s web interface again

    Same drill: browser → orbilogin.com.

This time go back to Advanced > Administration > Firmware Update > Manual Update.

You’ll see your router listed and maybe the satellites below it.

    4. Upload the firmware

    • Hit Browse, pick the .img file you downloaded.
    • Click Upload.
    • Wait. Don’t touch anything. Don’t close the tab.

The router will reboot on its own — usually takes a few minutes.

Once it’s back, log in again and confirm the new version is showing up.

    5. Update satellites (if you’ve got them)

You can do this from the same Firmware Update page:

    • Under “Satellite,” click Update next to each one.
    • Point it to the correct .img file.
    • Wait again. It’ll reboot just like the main router.

If one doesn’t update through the web interface, you can connect directly to it via its IP (check under Attached Devices) and repeat the upload there.

    6. Clean up and verify

After everything reboots, go back to the dashboard and make sure the firmware versions match what you downloaded.

If it’s all good — great. If not, clear your browser cache or reboot your devices. Sometimes it just doesn’t show the right number right away.

Troubleshooting Tips: Orbi Firmware Update Manual

    1. Check your setup first

Make sure you’re wired in. None of that Wi-Fi nonsense when doing firmware. Ethernet cable from your PC straight into the Orbi router, not the satellite. You want it stable. If you’re on Wi-Fi, just stop right there and plug in.

Also, note your model number. It’s on the bottom of the unit (something like RBR50, RBR850, etc). You’ll need that in a sec.

    2. Download the right firmware

Go to Netgear’s support page, search your model, and grab the latest firmware file.

It’ll be a .zip — inside there’s a .img or .chk file. That’s the one you actually flash.

Unzip it somewhere easy to find (desktop is fine).

    3. Log in to the Orbi dashboard

Open a browser and head to:

    http://orbilogin.com

or if that’s being stubborn, try the IP:

    192.168.1.1

Default login’s usually admin / password (unless you changed it, which you should have).

    Once you’re in, go to:

Advanced → Administration → Firmware Update → Manual Update

    4. Upload the file manually

Click Browse, pick that .img file you downloaded, hit Upload.

Now, here’s the part people mess up — don’t touch anything. Don’t click or refresh, if it looks frozen for 2–3 minutes just wait it out. It’ll reboot itself eventually.

If it takes longer than 10 minutes, then something’s off.

    5. Update satellites

Each satellite needs the same firmware version.

You can do this through the Orbi dashboard (same firmware section), or if it’s being picky, connect to the satellite directly via its IP and repeat the upload.

Tip: you can find the satellite IPs under Attached Devices.

    The Conclusion

This firmware update process is so simple through the Orbi app which is automatic. But it is advisable that you do it manually. All the steps are given above.
